Innovate: Empowering Young Women Through Connection and Confidence

This summer, The Calgary Therapy Institute had the honor of launching INNOVATE, a transformative therapy camp tailored for adolescent girls and female-identifying individuals aged 14-17. Led by our dedicated and compassionate team – Jenna Powell (MSW, RCSW), along with co-facilitators Sara and student Ana – the camp aimed to foster connection, confidence, and empowerment. We are thrilled to share that INNOVATE’s inaugural session was an overwhelming success, as reported by our enthusiastic attendees.

A Diverse and Supportive Community

The participants of INNOVATE came from various backgrounds, bringing with them unique experiences and challenges. Some had faced bullying in school and periods of isolation. However, the camp provided a nurturing environment where these young individuals could come together, feel seen, and safely take up space. The sense of community and inclusion was palpable from day one, with bonds forming quickly among the group members.

Therapeutic Activities and Creation Expression

Throughout the week, our participants engaged in a variety of therapeutic activities designed to promote healing, self-expression, and personal growth. Here are some highlights:

  1. Guided Imagery Music Therapy: This soothing practice helped participants relax and connect with their inner selves through music and guided imagery.

  2. Gratitude Jars: Each participant created a Gratitude Jar, filling it with notes of things they were thankful for. This exercise encouraged mindfulness and a positive outlook on life.

  3. Walk and Talk Therapy at Lake Bonavista: Combining physical activity with therapeutic conversation, this activity allowed participants to enjoy the serene beauty of nature while engaging in meaningful discussions.

  4. Art Therapy Exercises: Through activities like the Tree of Life, participants explored their personal narratives and expressed their emotions creatively.

  5. Narrative Therapy (Life Story): This session allowed the girls to share their life stories, fostering a deep understanding of themselves and each other.

  6. Vision Boards/ Goal Setting: Participants crafted vision boards to visualize their goals and dreams, setting a clear path for their future aspirations.

  7. Plate Smashing: This cathartic exercise allowed the girls to let go of things that no longer served them, symbolically smashing plates to release their burdens.

Building Bonds and Creating Memories

One of the most heartwarming aspects of INNOVATE was witnessing the camaraderie and joy that developed among the participants. As they engaged in activities and shared their stories, facilitators could hear giggling and excitement from outside the room. It was a testament to the power of inclusion and the importance of feeling part of a community.

To celebrate their time together, the group made friendship bracelets, inspired by Taylor Swift's advocacy for connection and kindness. These bracelets serve as a tangible reminder for each participant that, they are part of something special. They belong, and their presence was invaluable to the camp’s success.

Looking Ahead

The shared wish among the group members – that INNOVATE could have been a sleepover camp – was a sweet sentiment that touched our hearts. Their enthusiasm and sense of safety during the camp have inspired The Calgary Therapy Institute to expand INNOVATE, ensuring even more young women can benefit from this empowering experience. We are committed to continuing our efforts to give back to the community by providing inclusive, supportive environments where everyone feels valued and heard. The positive feedback from this inaugural session fuels our passion to keep innovating and finding new ways to support and uplift our community.

Conclusion

INNOVATE’S first session has shown us the incredible impact that a supportive, inclusive environment can have on young women seeking connection and empowerment. We are deeply grateful to Jenna, Sara, Anna, and all the participants who made this camp a success. As we look forward to future sessions, we remain committed to fostering a community where every young woman feels valued, heard, and empowered to take up space in the world.

If someone you know could benefit from INNOVATE or any of our other therapeutic programs, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can continue to build a more connected and confident future for all.
